What is Hysterectomy Surgery?

Hysterectomy surgery refers to surgery to remove the uterus.

When is Hysterectomy Surgery done?

Hysterectomy surgery may be necessary under certain circumstances. Some indications for hysterectomy surgery include: the presence of large fibroids or other gynaecological conditions causing pain and where fertility is no longer desired, severe menstrual bleeding unresponsive to medical treatment, or if there is uterine cancer.

Hysterectomy surgery may generally be classified as:

  • Total hysterectomy - where the entire uterus and cervix are removed, or
  • Subtotal hysterectomy - where the uterus is removed but the cervix is conserved and kept intact.

How is Hysterectomy Surgery done?

There are several possible ways or approaches to perform hysterectomy surgery. The surgical approach chosen often depends on the size of the uterus and medical condition of the patient. These include:

  • Laparoscopic hysterectomy
  • Open abdominal hysterectomy
  • Vaginal hysterectomy

When hysterectomy is needed, it may be combined with oophorectomy, where the ovaries are removed. There are both advantages and disadvantages in choosing an oophorectomy at the same time during a hysterectomy surgery, and the best decision will depend on your age and general risk profile.
