Obstetrics
Obstetrics in Singapore is centered on providing all-round care to a pregnant woman during pregnancy (prenatal), labour and delivery, as well as after delivery (postnatal). An obstetrician is trained to deliver babies safely, whether vaginally or surgically, as well as provide specialised care for high-risk pregnancies and miscarriages. At our obstetrics centre in Singapore, women and their babies will receive personalized medical care and advice to ensure that the chances of having a smooth pregnancy and delivery are optimized.
Gynaecology focuses on women’s reproductive health from puberty to adulthood. It comprises the medical and surgical management of a wide range of gynaecological conditions, such as uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and infertility. A doctor who specialises in female reproductive health is called a gynaecologist. A gynaecologist in Singapore is trained to perform diagnostic services such as pelvic exams, Pap smear, cancer screening, as well as treatments including medication, hormonal therapy and surgery.
Infertility is generally defined as the inability to conceive after 1 year of actively trying i.e. having sexual intercourse 2-3 times a week.
When to seek help After 1 year of trying, 80-90% of couples would have been successful in conceiving. It is therefore advisable to seek help at this point.Fertility does decline with age. Studies have found that the probability of conception over a month falls from 25% in women in their early twenties to 8% in their late thirties.
Cancer treatment can impair fertility because 1. Patients may require surgery to remove their reproductive organs 2. Patients may need chemo or radiotherapy which can reduce the ovarian reserve
With advances in cancer treatment, cancer survival is increasing and for cancer survivors, quality of life will be important with fertility being an important aspect.
