Understanding the Importance of Your First Visit
What to Expect During Your First Visit
It is completely normal to have questions or even feel a little nervous about your first gynaecologist visit. To help put your mind at ease, here is what you can generally expect:
Medical History Review
Your doctor will start by discussing your personal and family medical histories. They will ask about your menstrual cycles, any sexual activity, and any current health concerns you might have. This helps them get a complete picture of your overall health.
Physical Examination
Depending on your age and health, your doctor might perform a general physical exam. This could include checking your height, weight, and blood pressure. They might also examine your breasts and abdomen. This examination helps your gynae to better understand your general well-being.
Pelvic Examination and Pap Smear
Sometimes, a pelvic examination may be recommended. This exam allows your doctor to assess the health of your reproductive organs. During this time, they may also perform a Pap smear. This quick test screens for cervical cancer and Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a common virus that can sometimes lead to cervical changes.
Preparing for the Appointment
Before your appointment, a little preparation can go a long way in making your visit smooth and productive. We recommend the following:
- Schedule your appointment between menstrual cycles if possible. This often allows for the clearest examination.
- Avoid vaginal douching or using any vaginal products for at least 24 hours beforehand. These can interfere with test results.
- Compile a list of any questions or concerns you wish to discuss. This ensures all your queries are addressed during the consultation.
- Gather any relevant medical records you have, especially details about previous tests or your medical history. This gives your doctor a complete picture of your health.
